WELLA FASHION RUNWAY
A photographer approached us to design and produce a fashion runway, lit from within, for an advertising photo shoot for Wella. There wasn’t much time to turn it around, only a week so the design had to be simple, with a narrow choice of materials and vendors and utilizing off the shelf hardware wherever possible. It had to be structurally sound to support people walking on it. 1/2” clear polycarbonate sheet was used for its strength and machinability. Utilizing the standard 4’x 8’ sheet size, 3 boxes were made for a total length of 24’ when lined up. The inner rib supports were machined out of the same clear material and use sparingly to maintain transparency. Each box required 4 sheets to fabricate, with the outer elements slotting into place by tongue and groove and the inner ribs through cuts on center. Circular cuts on the sides and oblong ones at the end provide access to lights and create a repeating pattern. Held together with nylon threaded rods and nuts, the heavy structure was mounted on lockable casters for easy rearrangements. All panels were cut from original plans with a CNC router. An 1/8” translucent acrylic layer was added to use diffused or clear as required.
