CUSTOM KITCHEN ISLAND
The client’s apartment, located in New York’s Financial District, is in a building that had once served as the corporate offices of a New York bank. The long and narrow layout had a perpendicular wall integrating the kitchen to one side of it. Although fully equipped, it did not suit the client, who enjoys cooking and liked to entertain. Additional storage occupying a small footprint was requested. In this case; a custom designed island would allow the owner to face his guests while preparing food and harmonize with his decor and minimalist sensibilities. An advantage of Corian® and similar materials lies with the possibility to have seamless joints, allowing the designer to create monolithic looking pieces. A practical aspect lies in its inherent capacity to clean and easily repair small blemishes. The island is only 18” wide and it integrates a bowl carved within it as well as a groove to prevent round items from rolling over.
